13 Myths About BOARD GAMES

Board games have come a long way in recent years, from the concept of vinyl or chess playing pieces to digital devices with integrated screens. However, despite this wide-spread increase in technology, board games are still facing a number of misconceptions about what they’re actually about. These 13 myths about board games certainly haven’t killed their popularity as it’s still estimated that over 100 billion board games are sold worldwide every year! So if you’re new to board gaming and looking for where to start…

13 myths about board games are:

1. Board games are boring.

This couldn’t be further from the truth! Board games vary from complex strategy games like Risk, to simple family friendly party games like Chutes and Ladders. The variety of board games available is extensive and if you don’t trick yourself into believing that board gaming is boring, then you’re one of the lucky ones!

2. They’re expensive.

Unless you buy new and expensive board games like Monopoly or Stratego, they aren’t particularly expensive as a whole. That’s why it’s important to research thoroughly either on the internet or in a shop before buying your next game. After all, you’ll be playing this game for quite some time, so why waste your hard-earned money?

3. It’s better to go with a group.

Nothing’s better than having a group of friends together who love board games to play them together. However, not everyone is into board gaming and it’s a shame if someone isn’t. But hey, you can always invite that person over for a game or two! 😉

4. Board games are lame because there are no graphics.

As with every stereotype, this isn’t true either. Board games are an excellent alternative to other forms of entertainment, especially if you have a friend who is into board games. A game like Catan has great graphics and that’s where it becomes interesting!

5. It takes forever to set up and clean up the game.

You can always invest in a board game or two that involves less setting up and can be played quickly in one sitting. Or better yet, bring on some takeaway food from your favorite restaurant…it’s always fun to eat while playing a board game!

6. It’s just a game.

Most people may think that board games are just a way to pass time and have fun, but they can actually teach you a thing or two about life. From strategy planning and teamwork, to even some history if you choose to play the right games!

7. You can never win if someone else is playing with you.

This is true depending on who’s playing against you, and how good your opponents are. If you want to win, play a strategy game like Risk which requires serious planning ahead of time and quick action when it’s your turn! 😉

8. The only people who play board games are families with kids or elderly people over 60 years old.

It simply isn’t true. There are millions of people who play board games and you don’t have to be a kid or elderly to do this! I’ve even seen parents playing board games with their newborn babies!

9. It’s pointless to buy expensive board games because it doesn’t matter if you lose them anyway.

This one is another stereotype that has no basis in truth. For example, if you invest in Risk and lose, fine – but at least you can give yourself an excuse for losing :). If you lose your Monopoly game, well that’s a bit of a bummer…but don’t let that stop you!

10. Board games are meant to be played alone.

You can certainly play board games alone, even if you have a group of friends over for a game night. But the most fun part about it is that you can get your buddies to play with you!

11. You need to be cognitively able to properly play board games.

This is not true. There are two different types of board games: strategy and family-oriented. Many younger children who aren’t yet ready for strategy games enjoy family-oriented ones, which will help them develop their early cognitive skills like fine motor control and reasoning skills.

12. When you win, it feels like you won something significant.

When you win a board game, it’s satisfying – especially if you’re playing a strategy based game. However, winning doesn’t feel significant in the slightest because of the way board games are designed. In fact, strategy games are meant to not be won at all and are meant to teach you about the world around us!

13. Board games can be boring exercises in memorization and repetition.

Some board games are repetitive and boring, so always do your research before buying your next board game if you’re new to the hobby. However, there are many different versions of each game and many of them require strategy, which is what makes it fun!
