How therapy and counselling can help you

It’s a difficult question to answer, when someone asks ‘how does counselling/therapy help people?’ People have different needs and want different things from their sessions.

Lots of people come to counselling feeling very sad, lonely, anxious or confused.

They may have problems with relationships or they may be struggling in school. But it is not just these people who benefit from talking to a therapist.

Here at https://macledge.com/ has some more information on how therapy and counselling can help you.

We all have problems in life that we might find hard to talk about with family or friends or which we think will get in the way of our job prospects.

Here are some points on how therapy and counselling can help you-

1. It teaches you how to cope with your problems

When you talk about your experiences, whether it’s with friends or family or a therapist, it helps you to understand the problem better.

It can also help you think of other ways you might have coped with the problem if the first way didn’t work out.

2. It gives you more time to think about your problems or worries.

Sometimes when we are busy all day, we don’t have time to think about all the things that make us feel anxious or unhappy.

If you are having problems at school, it can be hard to keep the stress of thinking about what is happening to you all day. Talking to a therapist or counsellor can help you to spend time on your problems.

3. It helps you move on from things that are difficult.

Talking about things that are difficult for us, whether it’s something in the past or something that might be happening now gives us a chance to reflect on our feelings and try to understand them better.

You might also find there are some good solutions in the future which will help you feel better.

4. You can talk to someone when you are feeling sad or anxious.

Talking about the things that are difficult for us helps us to feel less lonely. Often in counselling people have described feeling less alone in their problems.

It can also help us to share ideas with others in case the best way of coping isn’t getting any easier.

5. You can help someone if they are having problems.

Not only do we have to deal with the problems in our own life, but we also have a responsibility to other people.

This helps us realise that there is a lot of good in the world and it helps us feel less alone in our troubles.

6. It helps you develop your self-confidence.

Talking about what is happening to us can help us realise that we are not so strange after all! So many problems, feelings and things that happen to us are normal for other people.

We all have them! Or at least most of us do.

With this reassurance, we learn to trust ourselves more and it gives us confidence that we can do the things that help us feel better or cope with our problems better.

7. It can help you understand yourself better

When you start talking about the things that are important to you, you start thinking about these issues more deeply. Often we don’t really know what we like and don’t like.

Talking about the things that are important to us helps us to find out and makes it easier for us to understand how we feel or that we might want something different in the future.

8. You can understand your parents better

We all know there are lots of problems in our family and sometimes it can seem like everyone is having a hard time! Talking to a counsellor or therapist can help you understand your family better and you might even discover things about yourself that surprised you!

9. You might want to talk about things with them:

Sometimes when we have problems, we keep them hidden. A friend in our family might have noticed that something is wrong, but we still don’t say anything.

Talking to someone can help us to feel less lonely and misunderstood. It might also help us to realise that some of the things we are worried about are not really so very bad after all!

10. It helps you trust others more

When people are having problems, it can be hard for them to trust others. Sometimes they think they are the only people in the world with their problems, which makes it harder for them to talk about them.

In counselling or therapy you can talk to someone without worrying that they might judge you. In fact, counsellors and therapists are trained to listen carefully and not to judge. They will try as hard as possible to understand what’s going through your mind.
