Concordia Gaming scp has really grown over the past year and we wanted to share some of our insights on how to teach your students. From podcasting to utilizing technology, these are just a few awesome ways for educators to add a new teaching technique for their classes.
The world of online gaming has changed significantly in the last five years. The market is now flooded with options, entertainment, and games that can be enjoyed with millions of people around the globe. This leads to an interesting development: classroom game design is becoming an increasingly important part of education all over the world.
One of the most important first steps in getting students interested in your class is to show them that you’re going to invest some time into the course. This will help motivate them so they’re excited to come back each week. One way you can do this is by having a 5-10 minute ‘icebreaker’ that consists of some sort of game with an educational component. For instance, my colleague played a fun little game with her students called ‘Guess Who?’ where she had them guess who was behind a screen based on their writing samples and personality alone.
The next step is to make it clear that you’re not just going to play a game for an hour, but that you’re going to be incorporating it into your teaching process. It gets interesting when the gaming element is actually used for something other than simply fun, as this adds a whole new dimension to what can be taught in the classroom.
If there isn’t some sort of educational factor behind gaming, students will lose interest and forget about their class entirely. If teachers don’t make the connection between games and education, they will not only fail to get students’ attention but their enthusiasm may also wane as well.
How can you do this? One simple way is to ask your students a question. Let’s say that you’re teaching about how to play one of the most popular games today, League of Legends. You could simply ask your class ‘how long will it take you to master this game’ and record the results in a spreadsheet. Then, ask them if they want to see the average score in some specific areas (team work, etc.) or maybe they want to learn how they personally compare with their classmates.
Alternatively, you could have students create some sort of ranking table for their best experience in terms of time spent playing, skill gains achieved, and/or if they have improved as team players. Once again, each of the students can have access to their own individual ranking and the spreadsheet can be shared.
In this day and age, teachers don’t always get to utilize the most popular or up-to-date educational tools on a day to day basis. If you’re looking to change things up a bit in your classroom, gaming is a fun way to do so. It’s important that you make it clear that you bought this class in order to teach with games and not just because it was something that was fun to do.
There are many easy ways for you to find or create Concordia Gaming. To start, YouTube has a wealth of information that you can easily access. On the other side of things, there is Concordia’s own Education Library that goes beyond just games to include educational content as well. From podcasts to images, the library is full of great stuff!
One great way to get your students’ attention is to get them all together in the classroom for your gaming session. You could do this by having them watch an introduction video beforehand or even play a joke game before starting on the real thing. This will give them something new and exciting but also help teach your class about how to be prepared for a lesson.
One important note is that you should ensure that the students are all on the same page. As discussed earlier, if the class doesn’t all agree on what is important then they won’t actually have fun. If you don’t want to divide your class into teams for a head-to-head competition, try doing one of the exercises above.
Just because everyone knows that online gaming is for fun and education doesn’t mean there aren’t risks involved! You should ensure that you’re using a computer program that’s safe for children and also using software and hardware that’s safe to use too.
Hopefully you’re already a fan of games, but if not then try them out! Having fun in your classroom will help you keep a positive attitude and make it easier to have fun while teaching. If you end up loving gaming, it’s great to have an activity you can do with your friends outside of school.
Another way to utilize gaming is to improve your own teaching style. In fact, there are many teachers all over the world who are using games in their classrooms as we speak. One way you can learn from them is by looking at the different resources that are available online.
With the help of games and more specifically, Classcraft , teachers can bring a whole new level of excitement to their classroom. The ways in which you can teach are nearly endless and will help engage students from around the globe. After all, gaming is something that everyone loves !
