1. Deep House

Deep house has come back and is making a statement in 2015. Deep house can be described as is a subgenre of house that has vocals and stuttering percussion. Deep House got its name because of the sound, which is characterized by deep bass lines and an eerie feel to the song. Deep house has been popular for many years but hit its peak in the late 1990’s.

In 2015, deep house was popularized by artists such as Disclosure, DJ Snake, and Flume who are all from England. The increasing popularity of deep house in mainstream music also correlates with the increasing amount of people listening to it on SoundCloud (3 million) and YouTube (1 million). There are many artists that fit in to the deep house genre including Disclosure, DJ Snake, and Flume, who are all from England.

2. Electro Pop

Electro Pop is seen as a subgenre of hip hop with popular themes such as partying, money, and fame. It also has elements of electro dance music attached to it. Most of the artists of this category use auto tune or pitch correction because they have rapping or singing in their songs. In 2015, Electro Pop was very popular in mainstream music with artists like Major Lazer and David Guetta who dominated the charts with hits like Lean On and Hey Mama which were both sung by the talented artist MØ. 

Electro Pop also reached its critical peak in the United States and popularity in England. In England, Electro Pop was highly popular with artists like Major Lazer, David Guetta, and MØ. It became so mainstream that even western pop singers started incorporating electro pop into their music such as Ariana Grande and Rihanna who were singing about partying and fame.

3. Future Bass

Future Bass is a subgenre of bass music that recently exploded in popularity in 2015 thanks to the success of artists like Zedd, The Chainsmokers, and Jack Ü with songs called Carry You Home by Zedd and Don’t Let me Down by The Chainsmokers which both had massive hits on charts around the world. The success of these songs also correlate to the increase in people listening to Future Bass on SoundCloud (2 million) and YouTube (1 million). 

Future Bass is characterized by electronic melodies, deep basslines and a heavy drop throughout the entire song. The success of Future Bass is in part due to EDM trap which focuses on combining bits of Future Bass and EDM together. The popularity of Future Bass has been attributed to the rise in people listening to these songs on SoundCloud and YouTube, especially since there are so many remixes being posted.

4. EDM

EDM is used to describe a genre of electronic music that’s becoming an increasingly popular form of music around the world. EDM can be described as upbeat and fast chord progressions, heavy basses, and heavy drops. It is characterized by repetitive synth melodies with a catchy rhythm. 

The Internet has become a very popular way to listen to EDM because there are so many mash ups uploaded to YouTube for people to listen to and remix for themselves. Since the Internet has become so popular, more and more artists have been uploading their own remixes on YouTube and SoundCloud which has helped spread the popularity of EDM in 2015 especially since there was no mainstream hit in 2014.  

5. Trap

Trap is a genre of hip hop and R&B music that was very popular in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s. Trap is characterized by heavy synths, drum machines, looped vocals, and a melody that blends together to create an uplifting atmosphere. Trap music was popular in mainstream music in 2015 thanks to artists like Wiz Khalifa, Rihanna, and Bryson Tiller who have all had huge hits with songs such as Juicy WORLD , Humble.
