So this is a pretty strange one. We’re told in the Windows Update update service that we will see a list of Windows 7 updates at the end of the installation process. However, we’re not even given a choice as to which version of Windows 7 our computer is using. If we look at the list of updates we are presented with, it says that we get Windows 7 Update Service 6.7.2601.
The reason for this is that Windows 7 Update Service runs in a special mode, which is meant to be used only with a specific version of Windows. Even though this is a pretty obscure list of updates, we have a hard time believing it’s not meant to include Windows 7 itself. It’s too similar to Windows 7 Update Service 6.7.2601 to get confused.
There are about 14,000 updates on the list, and only 6.7.2601 is the Windows 7 Update Service. Other than a few rare updates that aren’t listed among these numbers, Windows 7 Update Service is one of the few Windows updates that is completely separate from the OS; it is the actual “update” that is installed on your computer, so you can install it as an actual upgrade.
